All Consuming Update

This entry covers on a bunch of things that I just didn’t get time to blog about over the past few days, hence the title. I have to make it quick as well as I’m meeting some of my former college buddies for drinks in about an hour. In that time I have to feed myself too. 😐 Apparently, The Finest, have a gig coming up this weekend in Eamonn Dorans that I hope to get along to. A few of the lads in the band are mates from Oxegen.

Having major trouble with our work email system. We run a service for another provider in the North and their registration page is being hit by spam registrations at the moment. I’ve tried a variety of different things to ward them off but I can’t use mod_rewrite at the moment as it screws up the admin interface for the mail. 👿 Have to get on to our network guys in the morning about it.

I bought and played Day of Defeat: Source on Tuesday night with Trev. We used to play the original DOD constantly back in college on the LAN so it was nostalgic to see the old game back with a new engine. The game itself is as good as it was and the physics are brilliant with explosions and the rag-doll physics model really making a difference. In fact I spent two hours playing it without realising. 🙂 Sign of a good game.

IT@Cork Conference and Geek Dinner

The full programme for the 2005 IT@Cork Annual Conference has been announced (via Tom). I’m not too sure if I can go to the main conference itself as I’d need work to pay for me. I’ll see if I can swing it as I’d like to see some of the speakers plus I’m hoping to make the Irish Geek Dinner which will be on that evening. Neil T is coming over for it plus Robert Scoble from Microsoft will be making it. I can’t claim to know much about Scoble so I must subscribe to his blog before the dinner. There’s a price war on travel from Dublin to Cork at the moment so I should be able to get there fairly cheaply.

gVisit

I saw a post that Ian made a few weeks ago about a cool use of Google Maps, called gVisit. If you insert a small Javascript in the head of your pages then it will track the people who visit by city and plot them on a map. My current list of visitors is here. There have been some really interesting cities listed so far such as Wellington, New Zealand and Johannesburg, South Africa. You can see the last few visits in the box on the right hand side of this page. The free version lists the last 20 visits but if you make a donation, of any amount, that goes up to 100. I’d like to be able to exclude my own work and home IP addresses so I’ll see if I can throw that in there tonight.

Smatterings

I’ve been reading a lot of stuff lately on Bloglines so some of these entries relate to those but also things going on at the mo:

  • I’m currently filling out a job application form. As some of you (I always wonder who reads this ) may know, I’m in a temporary position with Dublin.ie until January. I may then be kept on longer but there’s no guarantees. A permanent position arose in the IS department which looks like it suits the area of work I like. The application needs to be in by Thursday so I’m going to work on it tonight as well.
  • Podz made an excellent post on the bird flu pandemic and links to a number of articles on the issue. This type of thing isn’t given the attention it deserves.
  • Sam over at [daily dose of imagery] has posted some great photos of late. Some of my favourites include: out of place, hydro towers and fog and trapped sunset. The guy has serious talent.
  • Tom posts about eBay’s aquisition of Skype. Now I’m beginning to understand why eBay were so keen to make this deal go through. $2.6 billion dollars is a lot of cash. 😯 He also posted about flexible LCD screens which look really cool plus the upcoming TechCamp Ireland event in October. I’m not too sure if I’ll be able to make it as it’s a former work colleagues wedding reception that evening.
  • Dave’s done up a couple of ridiculous posts on superheroes he’d like to be. Part 1 & Part 2. 🙂
  • Over at Asterisk, D. Keith Robinson writes an excellent write-up about Kanye West’s new album, Late Registration. He pretty much sums up my feelings on it and its a superb listen. My favourite tracks are: Touch the Sky, Crack Music, Roses, Addiction, We Major and Celebration.
