Ole

DSC03415
Saturday saw myself, Mark, Ro, Paul and Co travel to England for the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer testimonial at Old Trafford. We’d been looking forward to this for ages. The guy has been a model professional for United and is truly a legend for myself and thousands of other United fans. The day went really well but it was a long one. We had left Dublin early on Saturday and by the time we’d had a few drinks in Bolton later that night, it was 1am and I was set for bed.

The game itself wasn’t amazing (testimonials rarely are) but I was delighted to pay tribute to a guy who has done so much for the club. He got an amazing reception when he came on with 20 minutes to go and rightly so. Ronaldo could learn a lot from him in my opinion. He had a chance to transfer to Tottenham in 1998 but decided to stick with United even though moving would have guaranteed him more first team starts. He’s now coaching the Reserves team at the club and I’m delighted he’ll still be involved in the future.

We arrived home around 5.30 on Sunday evening whereupon I had a quick trip home to change and head for Darren’s birthday bash in town. I’ll leave the full story of what happened for a seperate entry later on cos I’ve a few photos to upload.

Friday Photo – Reflecting on the Triathalon

Paddy reflects on having done the swim

Took this along the side of the Moy on the way home after last Saturday night in Ballina. It was Paddy’s first river swim so completing it was quite a big deal. Fair play to the lads though, they all did really well. A shot of the triumphant trio is attached below the fold:

This was taken at the Indiana Jones show in Disney’s MGM Studios in July 2006. I’m really looking forward to Kingdom of the Crystal Skull which is released worldwide on May 22nd.

America Trip ’08: West to East

I’m doing a driving holiday to the States this year in September with a couple of mates. We’re looking at a total of three weeks with the following stops:

Las Vegas from the 5th – 8th September (The Grand Canyon, big casinos etc)
LA from the 8th – 10th (Hollywood sign, Mann’s Chinese Theater, Walk of Fame, Universal Studios)
San Francisco 10 – 12th (Golden Gate, Fisherman’s Wharf, Alcatraz)

from there we’ll be traveling north to Oregon and on to Mount Saint Helens in Washington state. Then it’s east to Yellowstone Park and Mount Rushmore continuing east (we may stay over in Chicago for a night if we’re on time) to the next hotel stop in:

Toronto from 21st – 22nd (Niagra Falls) and then finally to:
New York from 23rd – 26th (Empire State, Times Square, Central Park, Statue of Liberty, maybe a Broadway show)

A map explains the plan easier:

Anyhow, it’s clear that we’ll be covering a lot of miles. There’ll be 3 of us driving (pending me passing my test) so we’ll split it up as we go. I’ve been using TripIt.com to plan out the days, routes etc and it’s a great web app, highly recommended.

Here’s where you come in. Have you been to any of the cities above? What would you recommend we see?

America Unchained

Dave Gorman - America Unchained

Watched Dave Gorman‘s “America Unchained” documentary this evening. The premise was to go on a coast-to-coast road trip without giving money to “the man”. I’m generally a fan of Dave’s stuff so I was raging to have missed it last month when it was originally aired. I also had an added interest in the fact that I’m undertaking a similar trip (geography wise) in September. A full post is coming on that soon btw.

Anyway, back to the documentary and I have to say I really enjoyed it. I won’t spoil too much of the detail but I’m surprised that he was able to do such a trip. It’s opened my eyes to the amount of small ‘Mom & Pop’ businesses still littered throughout the US and I hope to find a few of them myself. You do have to love a small gas station that will open after a phone call from a local and fill a strangers car up. On a bank holiday. Fantastic. 🙂
