FridayQ: Endings

It’s a Sunday and it’s over a week late. Sue me. ๐Ÿ˜›

From the past, what’s something that’s ended which you wish hadn’t? Hmmm….that’s a tough one. Probably my time in college. I don’t know why I clicked with the experience like I did but it was fantastic.

From today, what’s something that’s gone on too long and you wish it would end now? The “war” in Iraq. They’ve created a massive quagmire that will take decades to sort out.

For tomorrow, what’s something you wish would never end at all? The goodness of the human spirit. That sounds like bullshit and it could very well be but with the amount of people out there who are making a difference daily, the world ain’t doomed in my eyes.

FQ FINALE: Visit the FridayQ Archives, and revisit an old favorite with new answers, or pick a favorite you missed to answer new. Since I’m into films I chose the Cinema FridayQ. ๐Ÿ™‚

If you could own any item from any movie, what would you take and why?
That would have to be the Delorian from Back to the Future. Screw any of the cars on Pimp My Ride, this is the original and best movie vehicle. What other car travels through time when it hits 88 miles an hour?! Now….where did I put that plutonium?

If you could become any character from any movie, who would it be and why?
I’d be John Keating (the teacher) from Dead Poets Society. Being able to instill a sense of right and wrong into young people is as an admirable thing as I can imagine. The character embodied what I would one day like to be as a teacher.

If you could visit any location from any movie, where would it be and why? I’d visit New Zealand where the Lord of the Rings was filmed. It’s an obvious answer but the place seems so picturesque and gorgeous. My backup answer is Astoria where the Goonies was filmed. Love that movie. ๐Ÿ˜€

FQ MOVIE MASH-UP: Combine some items, characters, and locations from different movies to create an entirely new film! What would you call it and what would it be about Ok, well I’d take Vince Vaughan from Swingers, Chunk from the Goonies, Gene Wilder from the Producers, Billy Crystal from When Harry Met Sally, Tom Hanks from any of his films plus Michael J Fox. In terms of props, I’d take the Delorian as previously mentioned, and a healthy supply of Jaffa Cakes. The story would involve time travelling to different historical wars and setting up camp. The guys would feed the troops Jaffa Cakes and regail them with tales from the future. I’ve absolutely no idea why I came up with that as it seems fairly pyschotic. ๐Ÿ˜† It doesn’t have a title.

Alas, this is the last FridayQ as Dave has decided to retire the series. Even if I wasn’t always punctual, I always loved doing it so farewell FridayQ and may you have a great retirement. ๐Ÿ™‚

FridayQ: News

A news story from your past that had a big influence on your life is… Even though it is the obvious answer I feel that I have to say the 9/11 attacks in America. The reason being that I, literally, watched the thing from its shocking beginning to horrible end. I had just made lunch for myself and was flicking through the Irish stations when Anthony Murnane (an Irish newscaster) came on screen with a hastily put together news bulletin. It was like he had literally been thrown in front of the camera and broke the news of how a plane had crashed into the WTC. As I sat and watched the tower burning I got to feeling that it couldn’t have been an accident considering how clear a day it was. Then my mum joined me and we saw a second plane go across the screen from the left and hit the other tower. I’ve never seen something that shocking that I had such a sense of seperation from. Could this really be happening? People will be trapped and dying in those buildings. ๐Ÿ™ I couldn’t get over it. We sat and watched the news coverage for about 3 hours afterwards in abject shock.

A news story that you wish would go away so you never have to hear about it again is… I get depressed when I see the coverage on the news of Iraq. People are dying there everyday and the vast majority of Americans are still convinced that waging the war was the right thing to do. They’ve completely destabalised the country and the region. Even if you have elections, it doesn’t magically solve the countries problems and the fact that the US has no idea of how to deal with a Muslim country and culture. The whole thing is a disaster area and I wish the US would learn from such actions although I’m 90% sure they’ll make the same mistake again somewhere else.

A news story that you feel deserves much more attention than it has been getting lately is… I have to echo Dave’s thoughts on this. The news story which does not get enough attention is that of Africa. As a continent they have some major problems. The G8 countries are meeting next month but even Bob Geldof is expecting a “glorious failure”. What does that say about the world’s leaders? That they won’t listen to the starving millions in Africa and the ordinary citizens attempting to weigh up lives against gold reserves? They won’t listen to the starving millions cos they’re far enough away not to hear them and “ordinary citizens” mean nothing to politicians.

FridayQ: Endorsement

Which famous person do you think sold out the most to endorse a product? What’s the product?

Probably Larry Gogan for some text lottery thing. Larry is a DJ who’s been with one of the biggest Irish radio stations for years. Can’t think of anyone else really.

Just found this ad for American Express with Jose Mourinho. I detest the man and this is justification enough for that point of view. ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

Which famous person do you think has the best celebrity endorsement for a product? What’s the product?

Hmmm. I like Peter Kay in those John Smith’s beer adverts. His comedy is classic and I just can’t help but laugh whenever he’s on tele. The diving one is my favourite.

Which song do you think has best been used to endorse a product? What’s the product?

That’d be Mic Christopher – Heyday. It’s used in the Guinness ad called The Quarrel.

FQ SPOKESMAN: Pair a famous person with a product endorsement that you think would be the perfect match!

Tom Hanks with anything. I don’t know why but I reckon I trust him to endorse stuff. ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

FridayQ: Foreign

Can’t believe it’s been a week since my last post. Anyhow, onto the FridayQ:

What’s your native language? Do you speak any foreign languages? If so, how did you come to learn them? My native language is English. I used to be able to speak a small bit of Gaeilge (Irish) and French when I was in school but have since completely forgotten most of what I knew.

What’s your native country? Have you visited any foreign countries? If so, which ones? I’m born and bred Irish but I have visited Scotland, Wales, Spain & Portugal. I’ll be adding the Czech Republic to that list in a little over a month. ๐Ÿ™‚

Are there any foreign foods, books, movies, or other items that you are particularly fond of? Name some of your favorites. Hmmm….I quite like Italian food. I don’t read much so books are out of the equation. On films I’ve got interested in Chinese martial arts films of late, stuff like Hero and The House of Flying Daggers.

FQ NATIVE: If you had to trade your nationality for that of any foreign country, which would you choose and why? Probably Denmark. I met a group of Danes which came over to visit our city council recently and they were very nice people. Reminded me of the Irish in terms of attitude and sense of humour.

FridayQ: Romance

Dave started this over at FridayQ so I’ve decided to join in.

What music puts you in the mood for romance? Emmm…..probably stuff like Frank Sinatra, Snoop Dogg, JT, or the old reliables like Barry White or Lionel Richie.

Where is the perfect place for romancing someone? I’d have to say anywhere with a beach. I was in Spain last year in a place called Tossa de Mar, north of Barcelona. It had the greatest beach with a castle overlooking a cove. The castle was floodlit at night and it was just a very romantic place.

What kind of foods get you feeling romantic? Strawberries or Lasagna. No idea why.

FQ LOVER: How would somebody go about winning your heart? Be honest, open, sincere, happy, thoughtful and have a kick ass sense of humour. ๐Ÿ˜‰
