I voted last night in the General Election. I gave my first preference to Paul Gogarty (Green Party), Derek Keating (Independent) and then Joanna Tuffy (Labour Party). I think I had the Fine Gael candidate in as fourth preference. The votes are starting to be counted now but by the looks of the exit polls Fianna Fáil (the party which has held power for the past ten years) is on 41.6% which is marginally ahead of where they were five years ago. If that plays out in the real results today then I’ll have lost a bit of faith in the country. If we stand for consistent incompetence and lack of accountability then we’ll get more of the same.
