Guinness Cork Jazz Festival 2011

I’m not exactly an expert when it comes to jazz music but I know the sound of a good festival and the Guinness Cork Jazz Festival (28th-31st October 2011) is shaping up to be just that. The opening act is none other than Damon Albarn, along with his band, Another Honest John’s Chop-Up, a collective of musicians who take inspiration from jazz funk and southern soul.

The Kyle Eastwood Quintet is another outstanding act who will be performing. Son of actor/director Clint Eastwood, Kyle has made a name for himself on the jazz scene, releasing eight albums and composing numerous scores for his father’s films including Gran Torino and Million Dollar Baby.

Other noteworthy acts on the schedule include; Randy Brecker, the acclaimed trumpet player, Tia Fuller, the saxophonist, who not only has her own highly successful band but also plays alongside Beyoncé and Richard Galliano, the renowned accordionist. Galliano’s performance at the festival will be inspired by the work of Coppola and the music from The Godfather.

Girl Talk – All Day

I haven’t listened to an album more in the past three months than Girl Talk’s All Day. The album mashes up urban/hip-hop vocal samples with track backing from a-ha, Bananarama, Blondie, James Brown, Jackson 5 and a hundred others. It’s a stunning piece of work and the best part? Arcade Fire at the o2

Arcade Fire’s gig in the o2 on the 5th December was truly special. The stage setup was one of the best I’ve seen and the band were really up for it. Someone caught Wake Up in HD and is embedded above. Fourteen thousand people pretty much lifted the roof off.

This is beautiful. Conor J. O’Brien walking around the streets of Paris singing Villager‘s track ‘Home’. It’s one of my favourites from the album and I’m raging I missed his live dates recently. Watch it in full screen.

The Decemberists are a band based out of Portland, Oregan and do folk/alternative rock. A friend from Lucan gave me their album ‘The Crane Wife’ a couple of years ago and I loved it. I subsequently picked up a few more of their albums, highly recommend ‘The Hazards of Love’ by the way, and picked up a few bits on their online shop over Christmas. The order arrived last week and had a handwritten thanks on the order slip. I thought it was a nice touch. Here they are on Jools Holland last year:
