Visually stunning. The CG convinces you from minute one and is as big an achievement as Gollum was in LOTR. He’s created a whole world of creatures, plants, mountain ranges etc that will blow you away.
The story is decent but not something your gonna remember for years to come.
See it in 3D if possible. It’s the best use of 3D I’ve seen bar IMAX.
Sam Worthington really is the next big action star. He was a standout in Terminator 4 and he dominates proceedings here.
When the action kicks off, and there’s a good bit of it, you know it’s Jim Cameron. He just does action sequences better than anyone else.

Overall: Well worth seeing, especially on the big screen.

Away We Go

away-we-go
I’ve had the cinema ticket in my jacket pocket since last week. Kind of like a silent reminder to write this blog post so here it is. Away We Go is Sam Mendes’ latest and is his kookiest work to date in my opinion. Essentially it’s a road movie but different in that a couple (played by John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph), expecting their first child, are trying to find their place in the world. They visit friends and relatives (some crazier than others) in an attempt to find a base for their expanding family. The film works because of the two leads. Some movie couples work better than others and the relationship between Krasinski and Rudolph’s characters feels genuine. This film isn’t going to set the world alight but it’s funny and entertains for the length of its running time.

Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?

To mark the release of 500 Days of Summer in the US last week, Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt shot this bank heist/musical number. Helmed by 500’s director, Marc Webb, it features a track by She & Him, Zooey Deschanel’s collaboration with M. Ward, called ‘Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?’. It’s an awesome couple of minutes and I’ve watched it a few times since the weekend. Enjoy:

Hat tip: Niamh found it on Saturday and featured it on culch.ie

The American Rabbit

Had a serious childhood flashback yesterday when my cousin played a particular tune on the piano. Myself and brother re-called it from a kids film we saw back in the day. Turns out it was called ‘The American Rabbit‘. I googled it this morning and have found that some guy has uploaded it all to Youtube in 20 odd parts. 😮 Watching back a couple of the clips is weird as I would have been 6-7 at the time I saw it. The critics certainly didn’t like it with Charles Solomon saying ‘Both the writing and the animation in The Adventures of the American Rabbit are so inept that the viewer expects the governor to interrupt the film and declare the theater a disaster area!’.

Anyone remember it? Here’s the trailer:

RIP John Hughes

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, The Breakfast Club, and Planes, Trains and Automobiles. RIP John Hughes.

“He says we’re going the wrong way.”
“Oh he’s drunk. How does he know where we’re going?”
“Yeah, how would he know? Thank you. Thanks a lot”
