The Captain’s Cup

DSC01516I’m gonna admit up front that rum isn’t something I’d normally drink a lot of. There were free samples of Captain Morgan‘s before the Blog Awards in Galway recently and I have to say, it was tasty. A mate of mine has since advised that the best way of drinking it is with the juice of a whole lime. Anyhow, they’re running a competition over the next while and I’ve entered a team – Team Black Freighter.

It’s called the Captain’s Cup and consists of a number of Facebook challenges (ie. submit a pirate chat up line, caption a photo, piratize your photo) leading to a national final with the winning team being sent to South Africa in July. There 10 countries will then battle it out for the Captain’s Cup. My team has completed a few challenges so far and with any luck we’ll be in the national final on May 20th. Entry details are here.

To Poolbeg Lighthouse

Went for a walk yesterday evening from Sandymount, around through Irishtown nature reserve and on out to Poolbeg Lighthouse along one of the longest sea-walls in Europe. The round-trip from the apartment is just short of 11k. I took some photos along the way as it was an eery misty evening out:

Ireland’s Eye

DSC01489
Last Sunday I took a trip to Ireland’s Eye with Peter Donegan‘s Garden Group. I wrote about the first outing to the War Memorial Gardens a couple of months ago and was really looking forward to this one. Before we set sail we got a talk from Diarmuid O’Cathasaigh of The Howth Peninsula Historical Society. Diarmuid gave us a fantastic history of the island and surrounding area (Peter got a video here). After a quick trip on The Little Flower ferry we landed and got to work exploring the island which contains a Martello Tower and monastic church. There’s a lot of wildlife and the few photobloggers amongst us got some amazing shots. After enjoying a short picnic we made our way back to Howth where most of the group enjoyed a few pints but I had to be off. Great day out and I’d recommend taking the trip now that the summer is almost here.

Pixels

A stunning short piece by Patrick Jean showing a pixel invasion of New York City. Watch out for some old favourites like Donkey Kong, Space Invaders and PacMan. The way they’ve blended real world footage with the animation is mind blowing, especially with the taxi. Watch:
