Awesome Tour of Sydney – Week 3

It’s that time of the week again folks. :) The good people at 1000heads have set our third challenge and we’re almost half way through the competition at this stage. The brief for this week:

We want to see you recreate a well-known Sydney building, monument or geographical feature, and have your photo taken in front of it. How you go about making the icon is entirely up to you – we’re thinking about going down the mashed-potato Sydney Opera House avenue (seems perfectly sane to us)!

This one will be tough so I’m looking for your help again. Not too sure if I’ll avoid the obvious ones like the Opera House and Bridge which I pretty much covered last week.

Awesome Tour of Sydney – The Sydney Harbour T

This week I knew would be tough and it was. I’ve spent the past few days firming up ideas around what I can create a Sydney-themed outfit. Thanks to suggestions from commentors it made it that bit easier. What I eventually came up with is slightly crazy and has brought me right back to the days of watching Blue Peter and Tony Hart. Early Sunday morning I rambled into town early thinking I’d be able to pick up the few bits I needed and get back early. It turns out shops don’t open until at least 11 so I killed an hour rambling around, hit Pennys and Dunnes and got home in time for the United match.

I’d make a sketch of what I wanted to do the night before on paper. Fairly rough but it gave me a basis to work off. I’d be making a Sydney Harbour t-shirt with the Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge. Now, it’s important that I point out that I cannot draw. My skills are extremely limited in that department and always have been. I’m happy with the final result though. Here’s the final outfit:

From head to toe: it’s a flat cap (commonly known as a Paddy cap here), all important sunglasses, the t-shirt with the Opera House and bridge, classy flowery shorts, and flip-flops.

Awesome Tour of Sydney – Week 2

I’m well late in putting up the description for this weeks challenge. It’s centres around fashion. My mates will probably be laughing at that as I’m not known as one of the sharpest dressers around. My wardrobe tends to centre around jeans and t-shirts. :) We have to create an outfit that screams Sydney. That means no clichéd cork hats. So I need your ideas. What would you wear if you were down under? The more creative the better. Remember that there’s another ticket up for grabs so you could be joining me if I win the trip. My deadline for having the submission ready is Monday evening.

Dublin Bus app

dublinbusapp One of the handiest apps I have on my iPod Touch is Dublin Bus. Developed by Padraig Kennedy, I’ve had it for a few months now and it’s invaluable. It stores Dublin Bus times on the device itself so I don’t need an internet connection. When the app launches your greeted with a list of favourite routes showing the next bus that’s due. You can search by destination and bus number and then click the star icon to have them included on the home screen of the app. Clicking through to an individual route number you’re presented with the last couple of buses and the timetable for the 24 hours. I’d suggest the following for future development:

- where the particular stops are on a route would be ideal. Possible integration with Google Maps?
- the facility to input what time the bus arrived at your stop. For example, I now know that the 3 takes approx 15 minutes to get to my stop from the terminus. If the app knew that it would be able to inform other users who maybe don’t use that route often.

It’s a great app though and I’d highly recommend you pick it up. It’s normally €2.99 but is available for €2.39 at the moment via the App Store.
