Awesome Tour of Sydney – Week 4

Wow, we’re already four weeks into the process of trying to win a trip to Sydney. So….

This week we are looking at Sydney Wildlife. We want you to take inspiration from the various animals that can be found in and around Sydney, and create your own Australian creature – whether it be a mash-up of existing animals (platypus, koala, wombat, emu– there’s plenty to choose from!) or a completely new species.

Suggestions so far include: Eric Lalor’s “Dingo-roo would be pretty fearsome. Imagine one of those feckers leaping towards you !”, Darren Byrne’s “A Cookerburra – a flying oven”, Christian Hughe’s “A duck-billed tree toad” and Will Knott’s “Great White Land Snark – A vicious animal living around the harbour who will publicly denigrate any fashion faux-paw it sees”. So let’s see your suggestions. The madder the better. :) Gotta move fast on this one as I’m in Romania at a wedding this weekend so may not have access to creature creation materials. If you’re wondering what all this is about see these posts: Week 1, Internationals Rule, Week 2, The Sydney Harbour T, Week 3, The ANZ Stadium.

Awesome Tour of Sydney – The ANZ Stadium

This weeks challenge was to “recreate a well-known Sydney building, monument or geographical feature, and have your photo taken in front of it.” I didn’t necessarily want to choose something that I’d already looked at (ie. The Opera House or the Bridge) so thought further afield. Elly’s suggestion of the ANZ Stadium was perfect. It’s a huge stadium having been built in 1999 for the 2000 Olympic Games, it had a capacity of 110,000. Modifications since have reduced the capacity slightly, down to 83,500 for a rectangular field and 81,500 for an oval field, so it’s around the capacity of Croke Park which is the largest stadium in Ireland at 82,300.

My version consists of cardboard, those wirey things you tie sandwich bags with, sellotape, concertinaed paper and a cooking tray for the inside of the stadium. It took me hours to complete it as some of it was really fiddly. Quite happy with the final result though.

An evening at Dalymount

Went along last Monday with Peter D to attend the Bohemians vs Liverpool XI game. We knew we probably wouldn’t recognise anyone in the Liverpool side, especially considering that we’re United and Arsenal fans respectively. We cheered on the home side while Rick O’Shea, decked out in his Liverpool gear, gave the visitors a boost. The game finished two nil to Liverpool with two goals in the last five minutes culminating in a penalty. A good nights entertainment was had and we’ll definitely be back at Dalymount in the near future.

Aurora Australis

These shots are amazing. Taken by Keith Vanderlinde of the National Science Foundation, they show the Aurora Australis:

Like the Aurora Borealis, the Aurora Australis occurs when solar winds carry charged particles from the sun into our atmosphere, where it reacts with the Earth’s magnetic field. These particular images come from Antarctica’s Amundsen-Scott Station. (Via io9 & travors)
